   NYC is safe these days, just don’t walk around wasted at 4AM and you’ll be fine. Take a cab.
   Gangs i’d say Harlem, but I have friends that live there and I’ve visited often and the streets are totally safe if you seem cool.
   Now getting out of Manhattan into the burroughs, I’d say Newark, Bed-Stuy, Bronx, and Jersey City.

   i would say any neighborhood within the south bronx area and certain neighborhoods in brooklyn, namely:

   brownsville
   bed -stuy
   east new york
